Reach Out and Read-Alabama

Since 1996, over 300 medical providers in 54 practices and clinics have prescribed more than 1.6 million brand new books to Alabama’s youngest and neediest children. These books are more than the stories inside...they are the key to unlocking the potential in every child in Alabama, and that is where Reach Out and Read-Alabama steps in. Thanks to your support, the dedication of Reach Out and Read-Alabama pediatric healthcare providers and volunteers, and the long-standing support of the Alabama Chapter-AAP, we are now reaching over 100,000 children each year, most of whom are growing up at risk. Together, we’ve changed pediatrics ~ and we’ve changed, and are continuing to change, the worlds of thousands of children and families. But even with this success, we still have a long way to go. According to 2015 Alabama Kids Count Data, 34 percent of children under the age of five live in single-parent families and almost 27 percent live in poverty. Programs such as Reach Out and Read-Alabama are vital in providing hope to these struggling families through the stories of brand-new books prescribed by their medical provider.
